James Sulikowski talks sharks on WVOM radio

James Sulikowski, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Marine Sciences, was interviewed by WVOM radio on June 23, 2015, after a series of shark sightings off the Maine coast were reported over the previous weekend.

In addition to stating his opinion that the sharks were likely basking sharks, a harmless species, and not great whites, as some feared, Sulikowski also asserted that shark attacks of any kind are extremely rare. "You have a better chance of winning the lottery than of being bitten by a shark," he stated.

Sulikowski explained that because of sharks’ highly acute senses, they are very skilled at finding the exact type of prey that they desire. And humans, he assured, "are far from their main course."
